Program Summary:
This session introduces the concept of pregnancy criminalization through a legal epidemiology lens, examining how criminal exposure is often produced not by intentional wrongdoing but through routine medical practice. We will explore how clinical documentation, hospital protocols, mandated reporting regimes, and interactions with law enforcement generate criminal investigations and prosecutions. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between drug-related allegations and legal action, including how toxicology testing, chart language, and reporting discretion shape case outcomes.
