This survey of the Right to Counsel Standards in the 50 States documents how states decide when a qualifying individual charged with criminal wrongdoing is entitled to receive appointed counsel.
New Report - The Right to Counsel in Indiana: Evaluation of Trial Level Indigent Defense Services
As part of its public defense reform program, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) commissioned the Sixth Amendment Center to conduct an independent study of the state of public defense in Indiana and to produce this report -- The Right to Counsel in Indiana: Evaluation of Trial level Indigent Defense Services. The report explores public defense in Indiana in great detail and offers several important recommendations to address its deficiencies.

To address the new threats to Fourth Amendment protections posed by the digital age, NACDL, the Foundation for Criminal Justice, the American University Washington College of Law, and the Criminal Law Practitioner presented a symposium entitled “The Fourth Amendment in the Digital Age.” This report offers an overview of the symposium and the substantive areas of concern related to new technological and legal changes that impact Fourth Amendment protections in criminal cases.
New Report: Summary Injustice - A Look at Constitutional Deficiencies in South Carolina's Summary Courts
During several weeks from December 2014 to July 2015, attorneys from NACDL and the ACLU observed court sessions in 27 different South Carolina magistrate and municipal courts. This report documents the constitutional violations witnessed in these courts, including failure to inform defendants of their rights, denial of counsel, and jailing those who are unable to pay.
Group Admission to the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court
NACDL is once again pleased to sponsor an opportunity for up
to 12 members to participate in a group admission ceremony to the Bar of the
U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Participation in this ceremony, in which
admittees are administered the oath of admission by the Chief Justice of the
United States in the well of the Supreme Court, will be available to the first
12 qualified members on a first-come, first-served basis and will take place on
the morning of January 9, 2017.

The scholarships will foster access for both public and private defenders of the indigent accused to outstanding criminal defense training programs nationwide. The scholarships, which are supported by various grants, will be awarded in the form of full or partial reimbursement of the registration costs of the excellent training programs offered by NACDL and other organizations. Limited travel reimbursement stipends may also be awarded.
