Lawyers’ Assistance Strike Force
The Lawyers’ Assistance Strike Force exists to protect criminal defense lawyers. Its mission is to represent and counsel NACDL members who face professional risk for zealously advocating on behalf of their clients, including threats of contempt or judicial sanctions, disqualification, or grand jury or trial subpoenas seeking privileged information.
The Strike Force gives advice but not representation if unfairly targeted for criminal investigation or indicted. The Strike Force will also advise, but not represent regarding fee forfeiture, litigation and will advise as to receipt of cash or other legal fees regarding compliance with 8300 and related regulations and laws.
The Strike Force does not represent members against client complaints, civil malpractice cases, grievance or licensing committees (federal or state), or if the member is a target or an indicted defendant, or tax matters.
How the Strike Force Can Help
If you are an NACDL member and are threatened or targeted because of your representation of a client, the Strike Force can assist. At no cost, the NACDL Strike Force will review your situation when you are:
• Subpoenaed for privileged or confidential information
• Cited or threatened with contempt
• Subject to a motion to disqualify
The goal is to ensure that criminal defense lawyers are not punished for fulfilling their ethical and constitutional obligations to their clients.
Leadership and Structure
The Lawyers’ Assistance Strike Force is co-chaired by MartÃn Sabelli, Howard Srebnick, and Martin Weinberg. Experienced circuit coordinators across the country are available—on both a formal and informal basis—to provide guidance, support, and, when appropriate, representation on a wide range of issues affecting criminal defense lawyers.
NACDL members may view the full roster of Strike Force participants in the online Committee Directory.
