We Must Be Vigilant and Fight for Justice

I am absolutely honored to be here. I want to thank Marty [Pinales] for
inviting me. He did it in an unusual way. He called my friend Judge Ed
Prado from the Fifth Circuit, who was coming to Harvard to speak. Judge
Prado said, “Martin said you must do this.” How do you turn down a Fifth
Circuit judge?
Barry Scheck, I can’t thank you and Peter Neufeld enough for the work
that you do to save so many lives. It really is remarkable when we think
about what our system looked like for such a long time. We should
really thank Barry Scheck for what he has done to make this country
better.
I cannot go any further without thanking my mentor, someone who has been
an amazing friend. He is someone I remember going back to the days of
Wounded Knee and the work he has done for over 50 years in representing
folks. This is someone that I had a chance to learn from and actually
work with on cases. That’s my hero, a giant in NACDL and a giant in the
criminal justice arena. T
