Washington, DC (October 10, 2012) – Today, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is pleased to announce that Ivan J. Dominguez has been appointed as NACDL’s new Director of Public Affairs and Communications. Ivan succeeds Jack King who served NACDL with distinction in that position for the past nine years. Since joining NACDL’s Public Affairs and Communications Department, Ivan Dominguez has helped maximize NACDL’s communications strategies through myriad innovations that have harnessed cutting-edge technologies and social media. During that time, he has supported every aspect of NACDL’s public messaging and provided robust support for NACDL’s white collar crime initiative.
Among other projects, Ivan launched and is responsible for NACDL’s Daily Criminal Justice Briefing, a daily member benefit designed for NACDL leaders, members and policy staff, which includes links to criminal justice-related stories from scores of domestic and international news sources. In addition, earlier this year Ivan launched “The Criminal Docket,” a podcast series that provides a rundown of the highlights in criminal justice news and previews what’s coming up on the criminal docket in state and federal agencies, legislatures and the courts. Each episode explores important items on the criminal justice agenda, in-depth, with top leaders in the legal practice, public policy, journalism, academia, and others whose lives intersect with the criminal justice system. All episodes of NACDL’s “The Criminal Docket” are available free in Apple’s iTunes store and at www.nacdl.org/thecriminaldocket.
NACDL’s Executive Director Norman L. Reimer said that “Ivan Dominguez is the single most qualified person in the nation to oversee the vital communications needs of America’s criminal defense bar. He brings extraordinary legal and journalistic acumen to the task and shares the passion for justice that is the heart and soul of ‘Liberty’s Last Champions.’”
Ivan practiced law for more than a decade in New York City prior to joining NACDL in 2008. He began his career as a litigator at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Most recently, Ivan was a litigator and the Director of Diversity, Pro Bono & Community Relations at the firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP. He served in the House of Delegates of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) and on the Board of Directors of the New York County Lawyers' Association (NYCLA).
Ivan is a 1992 honors graduate of Harvard College, where he received the Judge Charles Wyzanski Award for his commitment to political discourse and concern for the theoretical and practical issues of justice. At Harvard, he also received the Pechet Family Traveling Fellowship, which he used to spend a year traveling through Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Ivan received his J.D. at the New York University School of Law where he served as Executive Editor of the Journal of International Law & Politics. And he earned his M.S. in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
