Miami, FL Attorney Ramon de la Cabada Sworn in as Treasurer of Nation’s Criminal Defense Bar

Washington, DC (July 29, 2024) – Ramon de la Cabada was sworn in to serve as Treasurer of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association's Annual Meeting in Seattle.

Mr. de la Cabada has been a dedicated life member of NACDL for almost 20 years and has served on the Board of Directors for more than nine years. He has been actively involved in various committees and task forces, including the Task Force on Prosecutorial Accountability, Strategic Litigation, Budget Committee, Bylaws Committee, White Collar Crime Committee, and as a screener for the Clemency Project. He has also co-chaired several important task forces, such as the Trial Penalty Recommendation Task Force, Puerto Rico Fact Finding Task Force, and the Committee on Criminalization of Voting Rights. He currently co-chairs the Foreign Training Committee.

Mr. de la Cabada is a graduate of Florida State University, where he earned both his undergraduate and JD degrees. Beginning his career as a prosecutor for the State of Florida, Mr. de la Cabada worked in Lee County and later at the Office of Statewide Prosecution in Tallahassee, where he prosecuted multi-circuit fraud crimes and served as a legal advisor to the Statewide Grand Jury. He has also taught at Rollins College and Edison Community College and has been recognized by Florida Trend Magazine as one of the top criminal defense attorneys in Florida for eleven consecutive years (2009-2019).

Since 1999, he has operated his own practice, focusing on criminal defense, compliance law and strategy for corporations, and licensing/regulatory cases for professionals, including attorneys before the Florida Bar. His expertise in financial crimes has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Treasury, which enlisted his assistance to help the Dominican Republic rewrite its money laundering laws.

Mr. de la Cabada has trained in Spanish prosecutors and defense attorneys in Argentina and Uruguay on advocacy and jury selection. He was hired by Organization of American States (OAS) to help train prosecutors to develop a corruption court.

As a life member of both the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and NACDL, Mr. de la Cabada has contributed significantly to the legal community. He served on the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Standard Jury Instructions for Criminal Cases, where he was instrumental in drafting instructions for various crimes, including money laundering and mortgage fraud. Mr. de la Cabada's commitment to public service is evident through his decade-long involvement with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce as a member of the Juvenile Justice Board for the 11th Circuit of Florida, his role as vice-chair and chair of a grievance committee of the Florida Bar, and his participation in a Blue Ribbon Panel for the Florida Department of Financial Services. He has also provided expert commentary on criminal issues for major media outlets, including CNN en Español, Telemundo, Univision, and BBC International.
