United States v. Thompson

This was a felon-in-possession of firearm prosecution, originally brought in DC Superior Court in 2024, but the government declined to prosecute that case. On January 28, 2025, defendant was later indicted for the same offense in federal court in DC, where through a series of governmental missteps, the government was not prepared to proceed to trial compliant with the Speedy Trial Act. The government therefore moved to dismiss the indictment without prejudice, anticipating re-indicting the case at a later time when it would be prepared to go to trial. The defendant sought dismissal with prejudice, and on August 14, 2026, the District Court granted the defendant's request and dismissed the indictment with prejudice.
