Champion of Public Defense Award Nominations

The Champion of Public Defense Award recognizes an individual or group (lawyers and non-lawyers) for exceptional efforts in making positive changes to a local, county, state, or federal public defense system.

Nominations are now open for the 2025 Champion of Public Defense

Nominations may be made by any individual, organization, advocacy group, or state or local government. Although the outstanding direct, individual representation of every defendant is one of NACDL's foremost goals, this award is intended to highlight efforts toward systemic advances in public defense through legislation, litigation, research, or other reform strategies.

Nomination information should address:

  • How long the nominee been involved in efforts to improve public defense.
  • What issues or challenges they have worked to change.
  • How they have met those issues or challenges.
  • What changes or improvements have been made as a result of their efforts

In addition to the application form, nominations may include other supplementary materials such as letters of support. When available, please include links to relevant articles, reports, websites, or other sources that may provide additional information about the issues faced, the improvements made, and/or the nominee's work.

Nominations are due by 11:59pm PT on May 30, 2025.
