New York City Attorney Tanya Greene Elected to National Criminal Defense Bar Assn. Board of Directors
Washington, DC (Aug. 19, 2016) – Tanya Greene of New York, NY, was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association's 59th annual meeting in Palm Beach, FL, on August 13.
Greene currently serves as the Director of Training and Resource Counsel for the Federal Capital Resource Counsel Project, where she assists federal capital trial teams and leads federal capital trial training nationally. She worked for the ACLU from 2011-16 developing comprehensive criminal justice policies for state and federal legislative staff and advocates, mainly focused on capital punishment, public defense, solitary confinement, and juvenile justice reform. Her work has contributed to death penalty repeal in states like Connecticut, Maryland, and Nebraska in recent years. Greene developed the unique capital defense "bring-your-own-case" training series for attorneys, which was funded by the Department of Justice.
She has been practicing criminal defense law since 1995, when she was awarded the Harry Blackmun Fellowship to work at the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, GA, where she represented indigent capital defendants across the Deep South. In 1997 she was selected as the first active Death Penalty Resource Counsel for NACDL; her work included developing and providing capital defense resources and creating and implementing national capital defense trial training. She created NACDL's annual capital trial training, Making the Case for Life, which still takes place today. Greene was awarded the Reebok International Human Rights Award in 1999 for her advocacy for death penalty abolition, and she received the Rockwood Leadership Institute Fellowship for Death Penalty Abolition Leaders in 2012.
Greene received her B.A. from Wesleyan University and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.
