Miranda at 50

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Miranda v. Arizona, the seminal decision that provides the framework and procedural safeguards for police interrogations. The warnings stemming from this opinion have become common parlance in television shows and movies. Likewise, courts continually reference Miranda with increased frequency.


This issue of The Champion begins with the history and impact of the Miranda decision and its progeny. In “What Happened in Miranda?” Paul Ulrich gives an in-depth description of the Miranda decision including the facts, the attorneys, the parties’ arguments, the procedural history, the Supreme Court’s reasoning, and the immediate impact of the ruling. Peter W. Fenton and Michael Shapiro, in “Miranda Redux: The Impact of Dickerson v. United States,” pick up the timeline at the point where Miranda had been newly decided, but its effects were not yet fully known. Their article focuses on Dickerson v. United
