Ensuring Adequate Representation for All: A Message From NACDL’s Indigent Defense Counsel
I am happy to introduce an issue of The Champion dedicated to indigent defense issues and indigent defenders. This issue is for you — the devoted attorneys who are assigned, appointed, or serve as public defenders.
As indigent defense counsel, I direct NACDL’s efforts to improve and reform the criminal justice services provided to persons accused of crimes who cannot afford private counsel. I am available to help affiliates in a number of ways.
Technical assistance for affiliates includes information on how indigent defense reform has been achieved in other locations, as well as model bills and rules. NACDL also provides pleadings from reform litigation, model reports from other states, national and other state standards, and advice on how and when to proceed with various aspects of reform.
