Renee Spence

Training and Reform Counsel

Renee Spence is NACDL’s Public Defense Training and Reform Counsel. In this role, Spence supports NACDL’s Public Defense Department and its broad efforts to support public defense providers across America. She works with public defense leaders and training experts to develop live and recorded trainings for full-time public defenders and private assigned or contract counsel who represent accused persons who cannot afford representation. She also engages in research and reform efforts to elevate public defense nationwide.

Prior to joining NACDL, Spence defended indigent clients accused of committing crimes in her capacity as an Assistant Public Defender for the Office of the Public Defender Carlos J. Martinez, in Miami, Florida.  She also spent two years teaching on the south side of Chicago as a Teach for America Corps member. Spence earned her law degree from Harvard Law School and her undergraduate degree from Yale University.
