NACDL offers a number of discounted and full scholarships. To apply to any of the following scholarships, please read the instructions below and send the appropriate letter/application.
Needs Based Scholarships:
NACDL will offer a number of registration scholarships to this seminar for State or Federal Defenders and CJA Panel Attorneys.
NACDL membership is required for all scholarships. If you are not a member of NACDL, please join prior to applying for a scholarship. To apply for a scholarship, send a letter of no more than two pages expressing interest and the reason you believe you should receive the grant. E-mail the letter to NACDL Director of Events Tamara Kalacevic, at email@example.com - or fax it to 202-872-8690. All applications must be submitted before registering for the seminar.
Public Defense Scholarships:
As a result of generous grant funding, NACDL is able to offer scholarship assistance to public defense providers to attend this NACDL training program. Scholarships will be awarded in the form of full or partial reimbursement of the registration costs of the program. Limited travel reimbursement stipends may also be awarded to qualifying individuals to help defray the costs of travel and lodging.
Do you qualify for one of these Scholarships? Scholarships are available for full time public defenders, contract counsel, and private appointed counsel. Public defense support staff such as social workers, investigators, and mitigation specialists are not eligible to apply. Membership in NACDL is not required to receive registration scholarship assistance under the public defense training scholarship. Membership in NACDL is required to receive travel assistance. Individuals who are not current members of NACDL may be considered for travel assistance, but any awards made are contingent upon the individual joining the organization prior to receiving reimbursement. Discounted membership rates are available for individuals who register for seminars.
Demonstrated financial need is required to qualify for registration and/or travel assistance. Preference will be given to individuals with a high ratio of appointed to retained work, and those willing and able to pass on what they have learned to other public defense providers in their community. Scholarship recipients are expected to complete a scholarship evaluation form for the training program that they attend.
Application Deadlines: Review of applications for a particular program begins approximately three months prior to the start date of the program. After initial award offers are extended, applications are reviewed and awards made on a rolling basis. Individuals should apply early for the best chance of receiving awards, especially those seeking travel assistance. Applications received less than three weeks prior to the program date (May 20) will not be considered.
