NACDL Past-President Robert W. Ritchie, a Knoxville criminal defense attorney whose career spanned 40 years and whose professional achievements earned him virtually every honor the practice of law bestows, died of cancer April 28. Ritchie passed away at the Hillman Cancer Center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in Pittsburgh, PA, where he had undergone treatment for several weeks.

“The legal profession has lost an acknowledged giant,” said Tom Dillard, one of the founding members of the Ritchie, Dillard & Davies law firm. “Bob Ritchie set a standard of professionalism for lawyers throughout the country,” Dillard told the Knoxville News.

“His work ethic was legendary, his oratorical skills were brilliant and he had a love for the law and for justice that made every day exciting for him whether it was in court arguing a case or in the office researching facts,” Dillard added. “Anyone who knew Bob Ritchie is the better for it.
