From February through July 1985, three restaurant managers were shot in the head in separate armed robberies in and around Birmingham, Alabama. Two died.

Several days after the third robbery, police arrested 29-year-old Anthony Ray Hinton, a black warehouse worker. Ray, as he was called, was the youngest of 10 children, and still living at home, the typical custom in Alabama, to look after his mother.

The survivor of the third robbery identified Hinton from a photo. Police asked for permission to search the house and discovered an old .38 in his mother’s bedroom closet. The gun had not been fired in 25 or more years.

Hinton had a prior conviction for car theft, and so his photo was in the system. Three days after the arrest, police announced that the bullets fired in all three cases matched the pistol taken from the home.
