Remarks from the Foundation for Criminal Justice 2018 Awards Dinner

This is NACDL’s 60th anniversary. As you can see, the room is packed to overflowing. We have in attendance past presidents, members from every region of the country, big firm lawyers, small firm lawyers, solo practitioners, and public defenders.

NACDL has come a long way in 60 years. In fact, the organization started out in life as the National Association of Defense Lawyers in a Criminal Case. That was 1958. It was not until 1969 that the name was changed to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Since that time, we have gone from Wounded Knee to Guantanamo to the Clemency Project to a Presidential Summit on Race. NACDL has become one of the leading voices in the country on criminal justice reform, and is a leader in training, advocacy, and research and scholarship.
