In Memoriam: Burt Shostak Remembered as Lawyer and Teacher


Editor’s Note: Burton Shostak served NACDL in many capacities. He was a member of the Board of Directors for two terms (1992-1998). In addition, Shostak served on the Amicus Committee. Moreover, he was a member of the Lawyers’ Assistance Strike Force for many years. 

Everybody in the courthouse knew Missouri defense attorney Burton Shostak. He interacted with everyone because he believed that everyone mattered.

Shostak, who practiced in St. Louis, died on April 22, 2018. He was an NACDL Life Member, and two of his friends recently reflected on his service to the organization and the legal profession.


“When Burt walked through the courthouse, it was a given that everybody would come up to say hello,” said NACDL Past President Martin Pinales. “He was easy to talk to and approachable.”

NACDL Past President Bruce Lyons pointed out that Shostak taught trial skills at the National College for Criminal Defense as well as at the Cardozo Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. Lyons described Shostak
