On March 12, NACDL and The Heritage Foundation hosted “Gideon at 50: Fundamental Right, Ongoing Challenge,” an event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Gideon v. Wainwright. The event, which featured a panel of experts on the subject of indigent defense, reflected on the continuing challenges 50 years after the landmark decision. The panel underscored the importance of the right to counsel and that support for indigent defense in particular enjoys broad ideological support. The panelists included NACDL President Steven D. Benjamin, Texas Indigent Defense Commission Executive Director Jim Bethke, and former Chief Justice Rhoda Billings (North Carolina Supreme Court). Former Attorney General Edwin Meese III and NACDL Executive Director Norman Reimer served as panel co-hosts.
