Structure
New Mexico uses a public defender system. The Chief Public defender is appointed by the Governor. The Chief Public Defender is then responsible for overseeing the Department composed of lawyers, social workers and paralegals.

Funding:
The Public Defender system in New Mexico is funded exclusively by the state.
