NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Indigent Defense System is laying off eight employees because of budget cuts.

OIDS Executive Director Joe Robertson says the agency is facing $1.8 million in funding cuts and will lay off an attorney and seven support staff Friday.

The agency provides defense attorneys for criminal defendants unable to pay a private attorney.

Robertson says OIDS is also looking for a new home. The agency leases a building from the Department of Mental Health and Robertson says they've been given five months to relocate.
