What is the NACDL State Legislative Network (SLN)?
• A group of individuals, including representatives from NACDL state affiliates, public defenders, and others, working to promote criminal justice reform in their state legislatures. Most members fit into one of three categories: (1) NACDL state affiliate leadership and/or legislative committee members, (2) Professional lobbyists working for NACDL state affiliates, or (3) Legislative directors/liaisons at public defender offices. Other members include law professors, innocence project staff, and others.
What is its purpose?
• To facilitate communication on substantive issues and lobbying strategies among legislative contacts in different states.
• To create national momentum and attention to high-priority criminal justice reform initiatives.
• To provide resources and support to members in the form of model legislation, news updates, bill tracking, and more.
What benefits does it provide?
• Networking with other lobbyists and legislative committee chairs across the country.
• Access to the SLN web site resources (model bills, news articles, talking points, and more) and participation in the SLN listserv.
• Support on a variety of state-level issues, including mandatory recording of interrogations, mistaken eyewitness identifications, indigent defense, and many others.
• Training at the annual SLN meeting in August and other training events throughout the year.
