The Defence Office at the Special Court for Sierra Leone - the international tribunal with jurisdiction over those bearing the greatest responsibility for serious violations of international humanitarian law and Sierra Leone law since November 30, 1996 - is seeking NACDL's assistance in recruiting qualified counsel to represent indigent accused and suspects before the Special Court.
The Defence Office is in the process of putting together a list of assigned counsel from which accused and suspects with insufficient means to retain counsel privately may choose counsel to represent them before the Special Court. At the moment 5 indigent individuals in the custody of the Court urgently require the assistance of experienced counsel.
Counsel who wish to apply for membership on the list should contact Sam Scratch by e-mail scratch@un.org (attaching a recent CV, preferably in Word format, and outline of their availability). Alternatively, interest individuals may fax or mail an application to the following number/address:

A complete application should include the following documents. (The 2 application forms mentioned are attached.) Given the urgency of matters the Defence Office will likely begin considering applications on the basis of a current and detailed C.V..
(i) A duly completed Application form for Defence Counsel wishing to be considered by the Registrar for assignment to indigent suspects or accused
(ii) A cover letter indicating interest
(iv) An original or certified copy of registration with a Bar Association
(v) An original or certified copy of a certificate of admission to practice law
(vi) An original or certified copy of a current certificate of practice of law
(vii) An original or ertified copy of law degree awarded
(viii) A detailed curriculum vitae
(ix) A duly Completed Special Court Personal History form
(x) A photocopy of passport or other valid identification
(xi) A detailed letter indicating applicant's schedule in the next eighteen months stating as much as possible his availability for trial within the stipulated period.
