Task Force Evaluates State Oversight Needs

The Alabama Supreme Court and the Alabama State Bar have formed a joint Committee on Indigent Defense Services. The committee includes representatives from the bench, the bar and other state agencies. The committee is examining the need for state oversight of the indigent defense commission and is expected to recommend that an indigent defense commission be formed in Alabama. Similar committees have existed since 2000, and have proposed a variety of statewide oversight plans. Such plans have failed in the past due to a lack of consensus among the various constituencies.
