Drug Addiction & the Brain: Understanding the Science
In this highly-rated program, Dr. Alex Stalcup will walk you through the science and provide specific details about the drug / crime relationship. He addresses addiction effects on behavior control, behavior dysregulation, addicting drugs and the mechanisms of action, neuroadaptation, tolerance, and withdrawal, and the factors affecting judgment in drug users. After seeing this presentation, you will have a better understanding of why decisions made by addicts are part of a disease process, are not rational application of free will, and understand why reflection, deliberation, and consideration are precluded in addictive behavior. With this information in-hand, you’ll have the necessary knowledge and a deeper understanding of drug addiction and the brain, and be well on your way to effectively demonstrate and communicate your drug defense—“but not for the drug, the crime would not have occurred.”
