In this one-hour presentation, Dr. Kaplan addresses a brief history of the medical response to child sexual abuse, what medical providers don’t know, guidelines for proper medical care, classification of medical findings, differentiating a medical history from a forensic interview that has been characterized as a medical history, and explains in detail what the medical diagnosis of sexual abuse means. Dr. Rich Kaplan, MD - Minneapolis, MN Dr. Rich Kaplan has been working with child abuse victims for over 30 years. A board certified pediatric child abuse specialist at the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, he serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Kaplan is the Medical Director of the Center for Safe and Healthy Children - the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital Child Abuse Program and the Associate Medical Director at Midwest Children’s Resource Center, a regional medical child abuse evaluation program at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. He is a member of the Executive Board of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Child Abuse and Neglect (SOCAN) and has been named as the Section’s representative to the Academy’s Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect (COCAN). Dr. Kaplan established and is the Medical Director of Telehealth Institute for Child Maltreatment – a national program to provide expert review to child abuse medical providers regardless of their location.
