Gideon at 40 symposium: Remarks by Samuel Dash

MR. DASH: Thank you, Senator [Arlen] Specter [R-PA]. When I spoke to
Senator Specter about his coming to help us honor or celebrate the 40th
anniversary of Gideon, I said that one can expect any defense lawyer to hail Gideon, but a law enforcement senator and a strong district attorney hailing Gideon
means even more. And I think that one of the things we do is, we talk
to ourselves too much. We talk too much about the need for competent
defense counsel for the implementation of Gideon, but it ought to
be something that not only those of us who are interested in defense
work, whether it’s the National Legal Aid and Defender Association or
the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers or whether it’s
defense lawyers all over the country, it ought to be corporate lawyers.
It ought to be judges. It ought to be the ABA who ought to stand up. We
have been too timid.
