Mexican President Fox given Champion of Justice award from NACDL for advocacy against death penalty
NACDL presented its Champion of Justice award to Mexican President
Vicente Fox at a ceremony during its annual Spring Meeting in Mexico.
Subsecretary for Human Rights and Democracy Mariclaire Acosta traveled
to Cancun to accept the award on Fox’s behalf.
“The abolition of the death penalty contributes to achieving human
dignity and progressive development of human rights,” said Acosta in
accepting the award for Fox. “This is a joint task that needs the
participation of all governments, of the international community, and of
organizations like [NACDL] to bring about for all citizens the
abolition of the death penalty in any country where it currently
exists.”
Sandra Babcock, an NACDL member who serves as chief counsel for the
Mexican government in cases seeking to convince the United States to
honor international due process rights in death penalty cases, said Fox
