NACDL’s Amicus Curiae Committee has written and filed briefs in several
cases over the past few months. Most of the briefs can be found at
www.nacdl.org and are available to NACDL members, the media, and the
public. Additional briefs filed by the committee were discussed in the
March 2007 issue of The Champion.

Death Penalty Issues
- Abdul-Kabir v. Quarterman, No. 05-11284, lower court opinion, 418
F.3d 494 (5th Cir. 2005) and Brewer v. Quarterman, No. 05-11287, lower
court opinion, 442 F.3d 273 (5th Cir. 2006), cert. granted, October 13,
2006; oral argument held on January 17, 2007. Amicus brief filed on
behalf of NACDL, the Child Welfare League of America, and the Juvenile
Law Center.
Argument: Evidence of a disrupted childhood or adolescence — including
evidence of child abuse, neglect, domestic violence, and mental illness —
is relevant mitigating evidence as to punishment in a capital case.
