FACDL Helps Florida Innocence Initiative
The Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (FACDL) recently
donated $10,000 to the Florida Innocence Initiative (FII) to help defray
costs of representing falsely accused and convicted prisoners. FACDL’s
gift will help support volunteer attorneys working to exonerate the
wrongly accused through post-conviction DNA testing. The FII was formed
as a non-profit organization in 2003, at a time when there was no
organized effort to assist the hundreds of Florida prisoners with filing
motions seeking DNA testing to prove their innocence. Earlier this
year, legislators passed a law removing the previous four-year window of
opportunity limiting such motions. Attorneys for the FII have already
helped free three men and have screened another 1,000+ criminal cases
for viability of DNA testing. The FII has also advocated for
compensation of the falsely convicted after exoneration. For more
information, please contact FACDL
