NACDL and the ABA’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid & Indigent Defendants (ABA/SCLAID) recently released National Indigent Defense Reform: The Solution is Multifaceted, which offers a panoply of approaches for improving America’s indigent defense systems. Produced with invaluable support provided by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the organizations issued the report on Jan. 8, 2013, just as the nation entered the 50th anniversary of Gideon v. Prepared by Professor Joel M. Schumm of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, the report documents a day-long convening last year of 18 leading innovators in the indigent defense field representing all branches and levels of government, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law professors, and nongovernmental reformers
