The Pentagon and the Canadian government announced that Canadian and former Taliban child soldier Omar Khadr was repatriated from the Guantánamo Bay detention center to Canada on Sept. 29, 2012. Khadr was 15 years old when he was captured by U.S. forces in Afghanistan in 2002 and was the youngest prisoner at Guantánamo at the time of his transfer. Pursuant to his guilty plea related to the killing of a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan, Khadr’s 40-year sentence was capped at eight years by the agreement. He will serve out the balance of that term in Canada. He received no credit for the time he served prior to the jury’s 2010 sentencing verdict.
