Ansheles Moderates Panel at NACDL’s SLN Conference
Cathy Ansheles, executive director of the New Mexico Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (NMCDLA), moderated a panel on coalition-building Aug. 6 at NACDL’s 8th Annual State Legislative Network (SLN) Conference in Boston. Along with several panelists, she shared suggestions on how NMCDLA members worked with unlikely allies for legislative reform, using the successful New Mexico death penalty repeal as an example. Other panelists included Laura Sager, director, Campaign for Justice; Jotaka Eaddy, special assistant to the president and CEO, NAACP; Karalyn Aanenson, social worker; and Lois Ahrens, criminal justice activist and educator.Aanenson described how she contacted former prisoners through organizations that assist them with re-entry and trained them to tell their stories to decision-makers.
