A Passion for Criminal Defense

Heeney Award Winner Martin Pinales
Ohio lawyer Martin S. Pinales thinks of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers as his second family, and that family showed its admiration for him Aug. 8 in Boston by awarding him the 2009 Heeney Award. The announcement, accompanied by rousing applause, came as a huge surprise to Pinales. “I looked at the winners from the past years and I am in awe of their talent and contribution to the legal profession,” he said. “It is a deep honor to receive the Heeney.”
The Robert C. Heeney Memorial Award, named in honor of NACDL’s 18th president, is given annually to the criminal defense attorney who best exemplifies the goals and values of the Association.
Pinales, of the law firm Strauss & Troy, grew up in Cincinnati and married his high school sweetheart Anne, who is a teacher. Through her efforts he was able to graduate from the University of Cincinnati and Chase College of Law.
