Igniting the Spark in The True Advocate
I thank you for the illustrious and exaggerated introduction that was
far better than I deserve. I thank all of you for the honor bestowed on
me by this great organization. It is truly the highlight of my career.
I thank all of you for the great contributions that this association and
its members have made for the cause and preservation of liberty,
justice, and human rights in this troubling and difficult time in the
history of this republic. The brilliant, courageous, and robust talent
in this room speaks eloquently to this achievement.
It is not possible for me to come here on this occasion without thinking
about my dear friend, Bob Ritchie, who now rests in peace in East
Tennessee. He loved NACDL and its members and stood at its helm all of
his professional life. Bob was a lawyer of immense ability, both natural
and learned. He was the high priest of the law. His charm and wit were
