NACDL offers a number of discounted and full scholarships. To apply for any of the following general scholarships, send a letter of no more than two pages identifying to which scholarship you are applying and expressing interest and the reason you believe you should receive the grant.
Needs-Based & Diversity Development Scholarships:
Needs-Based: Based on need, scholarships are available to NACDL members for up to 50% off the standard full seminar fee of $409. Approved recipients are responsible for the remainder of the tuition fee, which is $205 (all other expenses are not included). Scholarship fee includes seminar tuition and a free download of the seminar written materials. Hard copies are available at an additional cost.
Diversity Development Scholarships: NACDL's Diversity Development Fund is provided to assist minority lawyers to attend the Spring Meeting in Las Vegas; up to five scholarships will be awarded. The scholarships include seminar tuition, admission to all evening social events, and materials. Travel, hotel, and other costs are not included. Consideration will be based on length of membership in NACDL, financial need (though not a requirement), nature of the applicant's practice, and commitment to the criminal defense bar.
To Apply: E-mail the letter to NACDL Director of Events Tamara Kalacevic, at firstname.lastname@example.org - or fax it to 202-872-8690. All applications must be submitted before registering for the seminar and received by April 26, 2016. NACDL MEMBERSHIP AND RESERVATION AT THE HOST HOTEL ARE REQUIRED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR NEEDS-BASED AND DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS.
NACDL Indigent Defense Training Scholarships:
As a result of generous grant funding, NACDL is able to offer scholarship assistance to indigent defense providers to attend this NACDL training program. Scholarships will be awarded in the form of full or partial reimbursement of the registration costs of the program. Limited travel reimbursement stipends may also be awarded to qualifying individuals to help defray the costs of travel and lodging.
Do you qualify for one of these Scholarships? Demonstrated financial need is required to qualify for registration and/or travel assistance. Scholarships are available for full time public defenders, contract counsel, and private appointed counsel. Membership in NACDL is not required to receive scholarship assistance under the indigent defense training scholarship. Scholarship recipients are expected to complete a pre- and post-training survey for the training program that they attend. Preference will be given to individuals with a high ratio of appointed to retained work, and those willing and able to pass on what they have learned to other indigent defense providers in their community.
Application Deadlines: Scholarship applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with review of applications for a particular program beginning approximately three months prior to the start date of the program. Applicants who are seeking travel assistance should submit their applications at least six weeks prior to the start date of a program for the best chance of receiving travel awards. Applications received less than three weeks prior to the program date (after April 27) will not be considered.
To Apply: Please download the application provided and submit the requested information to Diane Price by fax at (202) 872-8690 or submit the application via email to DPrice@nacdl.org with “Scholarship Application” in the e-mail subject line.
