Clean Slate

NACDL supports the passage of clean slate legislation in New York.

In the 2021-2022 session, legislators considered S.1553 / A.6399, legislation to automatically seal certain criminal convictions once a defined period of time has passed after the end of an individual’s supervision period.

In 2023, Clean Slate legislation has passed both the New York State Senate and Assembly. The bill will provide for automatic sealing of certain convictions after a certain period of time from either imposition of sentence or release from parole or probation, if the individual does not have any pending charges. The Clean Slate Act (S7551A / A1029C) has been signed by Governor Kathy Hochul.
