NACDL Awarded BJA Grant for Capital Trial Trainings

It is no secret that capital defense counsel throughout the country are woefully behind the curve in terms of access to funding for professional development, practical capital defense training, technical assistance, and other resources. Funding for public defender systems, private practitioners, mitigation investigators, and fact investigators who take on capital cases is no match for the abundance of funding and other resources provided to law enforcement, district attorneys, and attorney general offices. Thus, when the President proposed funding for training capital defense counsel in his State of the Union address in 2005, a group of associations and individuals formed the National Consortium for Capital Defense Training (of which NACDL is a central member) to take advantage of the funds made available through the President’s initiative.
