As the preeminent organization representing the nation's criminal defense lawyers, NACDL seeks to ensure justice and due process for all persons accused of crime or other misconduct. To accomplish this mission, NACDL continuously monitors legislation to keep members up to date and educated on current issues, and meets directly with legislators, various agencies, and other key stakeholders to ensure that NACDL's voice is heard at the state and federal levels of government.
But there is another critical ingredient in the public policy success of NACDL and our affiliated organizations. That ingredient is you. NACDL has the right connections in Washington, D.C., but make no mistake that on key issues on both the federal and state level, elected officials want to hear from you, their constituent.
We face key challenges in over-criminalization and over-punishment, indigent defense, national security and civil rights, and other areas.
Individual members of NACDL speaking together can make a difference in educating legislators and the media about issues involving criminal justice. Without the power of our collective voice we will find it more difficult to effect the needed criminal justice reforms.
With the resources provided and described here, NACDL hopes to lead our members in aggressively advocating for a rational and humane criminal justice system.
