Disability in the Criminal Legal System

In the United States, disabled individuals are over-represented as both victims of crime and those accused of crimes compared with their non-disabled counterparts. This overrepresentation is even higher for those with disabilities and other marginalized identities. To help legal system professionals address these inequities, NACDL is offering an array of trainings and resources.

From February to April, NACDL, in partnership with RespectAbility, hosted a 3-part webinar series on disability in the criminal legal system. Click on the buttons below to watch the titles in this series.

In this session, our presenters reference two reports by Accenture and Disability:IN—both of which report that companies embracing practices that support and encourage individuals with disabilities in the workplace saw their bottom line improve. Per the 2018 report, strong DE&I practices were associated with up to 30% less staff turnover, double the net income, and a 30% boost in economic profit margin, compared with their peer companies that scored lower on DEI practices.

The 2023 report provides a 5-part framework of imperatives to foster a truly inclusive and diverse work environment. This "A list" stands for Broaden Access, Raise Awareness, Foster Advocacy, Integrate Actions and Ensure Accountability.
